Hydro Power Station Penstock Flow Estimator

A flow estimator model built for a North Queensland hydro power station, used for high penstock flow detection and station protection. Across normal station operation the estimator held an average error of less than three per cent — accurate enough to protect the asset without nuisance trips.

What We Did

  • Development of the functional and detailed specifications
  • Extraction of historical penstock flow and unit operation data from the site SCADA
  • Linear regression fit of the plant data in R, adjusted for the station’s different operating states
  • Estimator programmed into the station control system (Allen-Bradley ControlLogix), with operator graphics developed in Ignition SCADA
  • Customer-witnessed factory acceptance testing against a simulator
  • Commissioning and tuning
